Floww

Designed to resemble the appearance of flowing waves, Floww is a tea bag display tray that is made from laser cutting and thermoforming. It has four sections to allow users to arrange and showcase their collection of tea bags. Users can easily identify the various tea bags they have when they are stacked at a tilted angle as opposed  to straight up.

Laser Cutting and Thermoforming Floww

Fabrication Process

1. Laser Cutting
Create the template for the laser cutting file in Adobe Illustrator and import it to Rhino. Place an 11” x 14” acrylic sheet with 0.093” thickness into the laser cutter. Set up the laser cutting file for printing and adjust the print settings according to the size and material of the acrylic sheet. Once the laser cutter is finished, open the machine and take the piece out.

2. Thermoforming
Measure and draw the outlines of the bend using a dry-erase marker. Place the area of the bend over the strip heater for 1 minute to heat the acrylic sheet. Press the heated area of the acrylic sheet over the edge of a table to acquire a 90-degree angle bend. Repeat steps until the entire acrylic sheet has been bent.
