Researching 8” Widespread Faucets

8” Widespread Faucet

Faucet Components Study

For the Lego faucet set, I was assigned the 8-inch widespread faucet. I had to examine the internal and external components to design the faucet properly.

Main Components:
1. Faucet Spout - Part that delivers water from the body to sink
2. Aerator - Responsible for consistent water flow, it helps reduce splashing
3. Escutcheon Plates - Metal plates that cover the gap around the base of the faucet and the sink
4. Handle - Exterior piece that is pushed, pulled, or turned to control flow and temperature
5. Valve - Component that controls water flow/pressure; May come as a Cartridge-type valve
6. Stem/Cartridge - Secondary component found inside the valve which controls water flow and temperature

Ideation Sketches

Form Exploration

During the ideation process, my team and I explored different forms for the faucet family. I was in charge of designing the 8” widespread faucet in the family set. Inspired by the aesthetics of Lego adult sets, we leaned towards a more modern and sophisticated style.
We added certain Lego features, such as modular, blocky forms and studs to some of the faucets.

Refined Concepts

Based on Sketch Ideations

Concept 1, called “Stacked Blocks,” had cube bases with colored “studs” to indicate the temperatures. Concept 2, called “Geometric Waterfall,” had a waterfall spout with square prism bases. Concept 3, called “Duplo,” was a kid-friendly faucet that had curvy handles and a spout with round edges. Considering how Lego blocks are modular and stackable, my team and I decided to move forward with Concept 1.

Full-Scale Study Models

After creating the full scale study models, my teammates and I decided to refine our faucet designs and set specific guidelines for the family set.

Specific Guidelines For Family Set:
- Blocky, geometric form
- Mainly dark & muted with pop of bright colors
- Proportional dimensions

Developing Final Design

Figuring Out Final Details

My team and I wanted to keep the same brand language throughout all the faucet types. We settled on a blocky, geometric form that’s mainly dark/muted with a pop of bright colors, and proportional dimensions to imitate stacked blocks.

Manufacturing Process

Since the faucet is made using a sand casting process, water will flow into the brass pipe and enter the chamber inside the spout.
